Jewelry, Jewellery or Bling, Bling (A slang made popular by the HipHop culture) as it is sometimes known as, is a form of personal adornment. Jewelry can be necklaces, rings, earrings, bracelets, watches or brooches and can be made from gemstones, precious metals, shells or glass. Jewelry can be worn as a way to make a fashion statement, a sign of wealth, worn just because it makes you feel good or even in some cultures, it's worn for protection or to ward off evil. Whatever your reason for wearing it, you are enjoying a trend that has been around for centuries. The first signs were perforated beads made from shells that were dated to over 75,000 years ago and even beads made from ostrich eggs dated to more than 40,000 years ago. Copper, one of the “newer” jewelry was first seen around 7000 years ago. In ancient Rome, only certain ranks could wear rings as jewelry, but in today’s world the wealthy are not the only ones to adorn themselves with jewelry. The type of jewelry will vary in price, but whether you are rich or poor, young or old, there is a style and price of jewelry that fits your tastes. Another area that has changed since ancient Rome is where the jewelry is worn, there are very few areas on the human body that can't be pierced today.
It wasn't until the late 18th century that romance started to play an important role in the development of jewelery. They believe that this was started when treasures were being discovered thru archeology and we became fascinated with Medieval and Renaissance art. With the onset of the Industrial Revolution, the process of making jewelry became more affordable because they were able to start using cheaper alloys and substituting stones for real gems which is sometimes know as costume jewelry that can look like the real item at first glance. No matter what country that you search, you will be able to find some very ornate and beautiful works of art. Chinese culture for example was one of the earlier in the Asian cultures that based a lot of their earlier designs around religious orientation and used a lot of Buddhist symbols in the designs plus their favorite color blue. India is one of the oldest cultures that specialized in creating gold earrings and necklaces, bead necklaces and also metallic bangles. So as I mentioned before, no matter what you interest, you will be able to find jewelry that fits you.
